Bad beats - they never end

Best two from today:

  1. Freeroll tournament. I call with pocket 4s, someone re-raises, and I decide to look at the flop (total of 4 people in the hand). The flop comes K♦ Q♣ 4♠. Couldn't ask for much better. It's checked around to me, I make a pot-sized bet and get two cold callers. I can't imagine anyone has pocket kings here, so I'm feeling OK.

Turn card is J♦. I push all in and get two callers! First guy turns over KJ (as expected) and the other... AT offsuit for the straight. Ouch. How can you call with that in no-limit?
  2. Low limit hold 'em. I raise two off the button with queens. The player to my left cold-calls, and the button re-raises. The blinds fold and I'm in an interesting situation. The button is a terrible player who's been bleeding away chips constantly. My inclination is to call, but I re-raise to knock out the third player. It works! And the button turns over K8s. Well played by me (I think).

Except that... you know how the story ends. The terrible player rivered a king to beat me, then gave away all the money to someone else on the next hand. The cruel vagaries of the poker economy. A third player receives all my chips without ever winning a hand from me.
