I've been having a rough go online lately, but there's nothing like Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning to get that back. The games are a whole degree of difficulty easier on the weekends, with more recreational players burning a few dollars here and there. I bought in short stacked several times and doubled up (or more) almost every time.
I got to play a rare almost-full ring game at the low limits, with eight players at once. Truth is, it's pretty lucrative but also pretty boring compared to a 6-max turbo table.
I still need to work on my shorthanded game. Often you'll join a table and it will quickly drop down to 3 or 4 players. At this point hands like K8o that I usually throw away are worth a call, I've discovered - instead of the inevitable ace you're up against J7s or T8. I still hesitate to raise with these rag ace and king hands, but they're certainly worth playing. In fact, all of the good advice books stress that playable hands like 87s are close to worthless shorthanded, because the winning hand is unlikely to be a straight or flush, just a high pair (or two). You'll never get more than 3:1 to draw, so even open-enders aren't always worth it.
As Johnny Moss (supposedly) famously said, "get two big cards and bet 'em."
